TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extraction Services in Schenectady, NY

Tooth extractions are a common procedure in our office and can be necessary for many reasons. Sometimes teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed, have advanced gum disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Those who get braces may need one or two teeth removed to provide room for their other teeth as they shift into place. At Glenville Smiles, our team of highly skilled and experienced professionals will advise you if tooth extraction is the best procedure for your dental health.

When Might A Tooth Extraction Be Required?

  • Your mouth is overcrowded
  • You have a tooth infection
  • You are at risk for infection (receiving chemotherapy)
  • You have gum/periodontal disease which has loosened your tooth
  • You have extra teeth blocking new ones from coming in
  • You may need to create room if you are getting braces
  • You need your wisdom teeth removed & more

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

Simple Extraction
Most simple extractions are done using a local anesthetic which will numb the area around your tooth. The anesthetic numbs the area around your tooth, so you will only feel pressure and not any pain during the procedure. An instrument called an elevator is used to loosen the tooth and then forceps are used to remove it.

Surgical extraction
If you require a surgical extraction you will likely receive both local anesthesia and intravenous anesthesia to make you feel calm and relaxed. A small incision will then be made in your gums. Sometimes the bone tissue that covers the tooth may need to be removed before your tooth can be extracted. The tooth is then gently rocked back and forth to loosen it from the jaw bone using forceps.
