Providing Dental Bridges to Clients in Schenectady, NY & the Surrounding Areas

A dental bridge is used to bridge the gap that is created when you are missing one or more teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth, on either side of the gap, these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth. Abutment teeth are false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are typically made from gold alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by either natural teeth or dental implants

The Different Types of Dental Bridges

There are different options when it comes to dental bridges that are available. The main types are the following:

Traditional – This type of bridge is one of the most popular options. It consists of one or more fake teeth (pontics) and is held in place by dental crowns, otherwise known as abutments. Traditional bridges can be used when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap. Some bridges are even strong enough to replace molars.

Cantilever – These bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth. Cantilever bridges are very similar to traditional bridges, but the pontic (fake tooth/teeth) is supported by an abutment on only one side, rather than both sides.

Maryland – This type of bridge is considered a conservative alternative to traditional bridges. Maryland bridges are made up of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal or porcelain framework. This framework is bonded onto the backs of two teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth. The adjacent teeth don’t need to be filed, since this type of bridge isn’t held in place by crowns.

Implant-Supported – When you have more than one tooth missing, an implant-supported bridge might be an optimal option. These bridges are supported by dental implants, not crowns nor frameworks. It is typical that there is one implant placed for every missing tooth, causing the implants to hold the bridge into place.
